Steyr at the confluence of the rivers Enns and Steyr

Romantisicm

Feel the medieval mood as you travel into past centuries. Experience the indescribably harmonious atmosphere of the old Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo town houses. The Gothic 'Bummerlhaus', the symbol of the town, was built at the center of the historical town square more than six hundred years ago.

Water flow

For centuries, the two rivers Enns and Steyr have determined the development of the town. As early as 980 two noble knights founded the Styraburg, now the mighty Lamberg Castle, at the point, where these two rivers meet. The townscape of Steyr is dominated by defensive structures, old fountains and 119 bridges and catwalks.

Discovering culture

"The region in and around Steyr is beautiful beyond description..." are the words the great composer Franz Schubert wrote to his brother in Vienna. Steyr with its precious cultural treasures is a work of art itself and is the ideal setting for all kinds of events. The soaring church towers, the romantic courtyards, bubbling fountains, the old town square, the impressive Lamberg Castle - the architecture in Steyr forms a perfect backdrop with the right atmosphere. World theatre in the Castle moat, virtuoso concerts in the churches, sensational exhibitions in the Castle gallery, cabaret and reviews in the Baroque 'Altes Theater' - music, theatre and tradition in a delightful package. Culture is always in season in Steyr!

Time journey

Since time immemorial, the economy of the town has been dominated and determined by water. As a means of transport, it brought wealth and well-being to the population thanks to the iron trade and the crafts that this involved, and, as the driving force for mills and electrical energy, it created the basis for the industrialisation. Alongside Steyr's world-wide importance in the fields of mechanical engineering and the metal industry, the town's engineers are also involved in research in water processing, environment technology and the exploitation of hydrogen. For their future developements, mayr Steyr businesses are continuing to rely on the force of water.

Christkindl

In winter the 'Romantic town' becomes Austria's official 'Christkindl town'. From the pilgrimage village of Christkindl, the special post office sends millions of Christmas greetings and answers children's letters. The 'Mechanical crib' and the 'Pöttmesser crib' testify to Steyr's long tradition of Christmas cribs.
